Dartmouth Common Skatepark

this skatepark is one of the newest in HRM, but unfortunately is one of the least modern skateparks in terms of it's features. the Dartmouth skatepark is primarily composed of ramps and "transition" features, whereas most skateparks are at least a combination of both street and transition elements. the reason for this design, was the influence of a group of skaters from an older generation who wanted to build something with a steep learning curve that would always offer new challenges for skating. in fairness, that's a lot more thought that has gone into most of the city-built skateparks around here, but unfortunately these design choices are extremely limiting for the current generation. considering that the direction skating has taken gravitated towards street style and away from bowl skating, most skaters choose to equip themselves with street oriented wheels, trucks and decks. pulling up to this park with a street setup is essentially an invitation to turn around and leave. there is virtually no crossover appeal between this park and most of the others around it. It definitely does offer a challenge to those who want one, but as the only "major" skatepark in Dartmouth, it really makes no sense cohesively. there are definitely a few super dedicated locals there who love the park, and who are mostly welcoming and eager to see younger skaters step up to the obstacles, but there are very few people I personally know who ever suggest a trip over to skate Dartmouth bowl. there's literally already a 10-12 foot bowl at the commons that never gets used. this park represents a totally missed opportunity to make a great skatepark in Dartmouth and connect the skate scene in a cohesive way.
